Yulong Deng - Introduction

My name is Yulong Deng. In Chinese, Yulong is the meaning of ' dragon in the universe', Deng is my last name, and now I am a MS student in Chemical Engineering Department in CMU. I am from Panjin, Liaoning Province, China. Maybe most Americans know big cities in China, such as Shanghai, Beijing, Hongkong and so on. While I live in a small city in the northeast of China which is famous for the beautiful scenery, delicious rice and water crabs. In addition my home is an oil field, many industries related with oil are built there. Although it is a small city without a large population, but people there are friendly and living happily. Before I came here, I was studying chemical engineering in Dalian University of Technology in China.

During the time of my undergraduate, I got to know how the basic reactions got together to make a whole industry process. A chemical engineer has to take a lot of things into consideration. Such as the reaction condition, the size and type of the equipment, and many other things. In addition, I also learned how to optimize the energy to minimize the cost on it, which is also good for the environment.

The city of my hometown is facing the problem that the oil is decreasing, but the production of it is increasing. Finally we have to face the problem that the main economic support of my hometown will disappear. It is a problem even in the world wild. We have to find new ways to save the resources we can not get any more, and at the same time we have to keep the economic increasing. When I was in high school, I was always thinking what if the world had no oil at all.

Actually I am really focusing on the problem of the environment which is mainly influenced by the industries created by the human being. As a result of the high speed of development, human has to use more energy to support this. Number of cars is increasing, more and more industries are being built, and the resources on the earth are decreasing. Forests are decreasing, many species are disappearing as human beings are invading to there homes. What’s more, the air, the most important for human beings, is being polluted. It is well known that the air in China is getting really bad now, and so it is. I have seen it and felt it. Especially in winter, more coal is burned to keep the house warm in the north, and the sky is always grey.

The air pollution in China is a problem which reflects the side effect of high speed of development of industries in China, I think we should find other ways, or we must find other ways to make the world a good place for our offspring.
